Buy-better tips
Ask "is this grown here?"
Some market vendors resell imported fruit that rode a cargo ship green. Local + in-season = far better flavor.
Keauhou (Sat) is the gold standard
in Kona — vendors must sell 100% Big Island-grown produce.
Mango varieties are a sport.
Hayden, Pirie, Rapoza, Keitt — try a few side by side; ask growers which is peaking that week.
Go early.
The best lychee, mango and avocado sell out within the first hour or two.
Roadside stands & honor boxes
in Holualoa, Kohala and along Hwy 19 often have the cheapest tree-ripe fruit — bring small cash.
